Health Warning !
Speed - You can see from the graph that the engine is still delivering plenty of power at a 160kph (100mph), where as the 105bhp map below has dramatically dropped off. This has the advantage of giving a much higher top speed and plenty of power for acceleration at motorway speeds. Driving at high speeds was much easier and the engine didn't struggle at all, it just delivered what you asked of it.
Fuel - The fuel consumption figures were only slightly down with 140bhp map. After a couple of weeks 'normal' driving my Multi returned 42.6 mpg, un-tuned was averaging 45mpg and peaked at 48mpg.
Clutch - With so much power my poor old 47k mile clutch started to slip on full tilt (judder from the engine). Clutches today should last well over 100k if treated with respect. Because of this, I was constantly having to remind myself not to put on too much 'gas', or I'd end up with one over-cooked clutch. This made driving in the peak power band in high gears difficult. ( This is not a problem with the 110 or 115JTD engines .. See the 155bhp story below )
The 130 bhp experience:
Nigel and Andy then re-mapped my Multipla to a more sedate 130bhp. After completing the same two week test and following a similar drive pattern this is the result:
Gone now are the fears of clutch slip, this means that the full potential of the engine can now be used at all speeds and rev ranges. Despite the reduction in peak power there is still plenty of pull when you need it most, much to the surprise of many lesser car drivers at the lights !
What about the fuel consumption ?
After a 'proper' brim to brim test the 130bhp JTD returned a respectable 44.83mpg, and I wasn't trying too hard to achieve a low figure.
