Multipla Owners Engine Tuning Page
(A report by Oddbod...founder of the Multiplaowners website)

You may have noticed the Multipla Forum postings from Nigel Bennett, founder member of the Fiat Bravo Owners Club and his engine tuning business - Angel Tuning

Being just 'down the road' from my home, Nigel and his colleague Andy tuned my 105bhp JTD to a massive 140bhp !!

Although this was the first time they had tuned a Multipla, Nigel & Andy have re-mapped dozens of Fiat JTD engines and have a long list of very happy customers.

The 140bhp experience:

First impressions: The increase in power was noticed immediately from pulling away at the first bend. In low gears the JTD was eager to launch the Multipla into hyper-space ( a reference familiar to recent Starship Enterprise related messages on the Multipla Forum ! ). In higher gears there was the reassurance of power in reserve to cope with hills and overtaking without the need to move down a gear. Acceleration from 0-60mph was sub 10 seconds (two up and all seats in place), untuned took over 13secs.

How is it possible: The JTD is deliberately 'de-tuned' by Fiat to take into consideration all climate and fuel variable though-out its portfolio of destination Countries. In the UK where we do not suffer extremes of temperature or poor fuel quality, therefore we can safely exploit this untapped potential to the full. Angel Tuning have the technology to re-map the engine ECU to give the JTD up to 35 more bhp. So for an original JTD105 you get 140bhp and even more smiles per mile !

Power trace

This is the power trace of my Multipla before and after the remapping.
The untuned 105bhp trace peaks at 59KWatts at the rollers and the remapped trace peaks at 93KWatts.
Taking into consideration the drag and losses in the power-train we are looking at over 140bph at the flywheel.

Health Warning !

Speed - You can see from the graph that the engine is still delivering plenty of power at a 160kph (100mph), where as the 105bhp map below has dramatically dropped off. This has the advantage of giving a much higher top speed and plenty of power for acceleration at motorway speeds. Driving at high speeds was much easier and the engine didn't struggle at all, it just delivered what you asked of it.

Fuel - The fuel consumption figures were only slightly down with 140bhp map. After a couple of weeks 'normal' driving my Multi returned 42.6 mpg, un-tuned was averaging 45mpg and peaked at 48mpg.

Clutch - With so much power my poor old 47k mile clutch started to slip on full tilt (judder from the engine). Clutches today should last well over 100k if treated with respect. Because of this, I was constantly having to remind myself not to put on too much 'gas', or I'd end up with one over-cooked clutch. This made driving in the peak power band in high gears difficult. ( This is not a problem with the 110 or 115JTD engines .. See the 155bhp story below )

The 130 bhp experience:

Nigel and Andy then re-mapped my Multipla to a more sedate 130bhp. After completing the same two week test and following a similar drive pattern this is the result:

Gone now are the fears of clutch slip, this means that the full potential of the engine can now be used at all speeds and rev ranges. Despite the reduction in peak power there is still plenty of pull when you need it most, much to the surprise of many lesser car drivers at the lights !

What about the fuel consumption ?
After a 'proper' brim to brim test the 130bhp JTD returned a respectable 44.83mpg, and I wasn't trying too hard to achieve a low figure.

The 155 bhp story:

Since may JTD was tuned, Nigel and Andy have re-mapped several more Multi's and given thier drivers something else to smile about.

Now Angel Tuning can offer engine tuning maps from 120bhp to an incredible 155bhp for the standard 110bhp and 115bhp engines. Owners of 110JTD Multipla's with the 155bhp map have not reported any problems with clutch slip or emissions.

Nigel and his team at Angel Tuning now have 6 locations around the UK, including a
base in Glasgow and are mobile in Ireland every month. So give Nigel or Andy a call at Angel Tuning and put an extra-wide smile on your face ;-) and don't forget to mention the Multipla Owners Club website.
